Character's Full Name: Data
Character's Canon: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Character's Canon Point: post-02x11, 'Contagion'
Character's background (their past and present): Data is an android, created by famed cyberneticist Dr. Noonien Soong on the planet Omicron Theta (somewhere around 2336). He was preceded by his "brother," Lore, a physically identical android whose personality was both far more emotional and far more unstable. Lore led a dangerous, mysterious crystalline entity to the planet before his dismantling: the colonists were able to evade it for a while, but eventually Lore led the entity to their hiding place. They were either destroyed by or fled from the creature. Data was left behind, deactivated by one of his creators for fear that he would turn out like Lore had, and was later reactivated by a Starfleet away team that just so happened to come across him.
Though he's programmed with the logs/journals/basic synaptic imprints of all of the human colonists from his former home, Data's early years and experiences were deleted when he was deactivated. He knew nothing of his creator, the circumstances of his discovery, or his own intended purpose.
After years of studying (and being studied by) humans, learning basic social navigation, being tested, etc., Data elected to enter Starfleet Academy: a way to give back to the people who had given him so much. After four years, he graduated with honors in exobiology and probability mechanics, then entered into active duty. Over the years, he worked his way up to the rank of (fairly well-decorated) Lieutenant Commander, and was eventually assigned to the duty of second officer aboard USS Enterprise-D. As of his canonpoint, this is where he currently serves.
As a Starfleet vessel, the Enterprise pretty much does whatever Starfleet tells them they're meant to be doing: whether it's investigating a mysterious signal from beyond the borders of known space or escorting diplomats to a summit as a neutral party. To sum it up basically, consider the usual Star Trek spiel: seek out new life and civilizations, go where no man has gone before, etc.
Character's skills/abilities/powers:
- physical strength and durability far exceeding that of a human. in this category, I also include an ability to survive for extended periods without breathing, no need for food or water, general immunity to radiation, illness, telepathy, and empathic abilities. sadly, he has no buoyancy and therefore no ability to swim. what a waste.
- very high mental capacity. data remembers everything that he's exposed to, unless he's been tampered with or had memories deleted. basically a walking encyclopedia with incredibly high processing speed. he is also able to precisely imitate the voice of anyone that he's heard speaking.
- versed in multiple languages and instruments. technically skilled painter. cat caretaker.
Any special equipment your character is bringing along?: Not really. Just Data and his (now outdated) Starfleet uniform.
Are you bringing your character to
ten_fwd from another game?: N/A
If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s): N/A
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? My primary draws to Ten Forward are the manageable pace and the various cast members already in-game (some of whom I've had the pleasure of threading with on dear_player)! The premise of the game itself is also very appealing. Getting to play a Starfleet officer in a game on the Enterprise is practically ideal. I guess I just kind of like the look of Ten Forward! As for character plans, Data already has a development track pretty well laid-in from his canon writing. I'd certainly want to follow along that established line: learning more about humanity, asking questions, performing his duties, trying new things. I feel like Data being Data could turn out an interesting mix with the various characters and canons that the game has in store.
